David G. Dunbar’s piece in the latest Missional Journal is devoted to ‘Aliens and Strangers’.
He recognises this offers ‘a powerful biblical image of the church’s place in the world’ – from the ‘prototypical biblical example’ of Abraham through his descendants living as aliens in Egypt and subsequently in the diaspora right through to 1 Peter, which has ‘the fullest development of this idea’.
He draws on Miroslav Volf’s notion of ‘soft difference’ to describe how 1 Peter presents the relationship of the church to the world, suggesting (with James Davison Hunter) that ‘the calling of the church is to be a community of peace’.
