Peter Oakes on Galatians

The latest commentary in Baker’s Paideia series is by Peter Oakes, on Galatians, and it will be excellent.

The publisher makes available here a long pdf excerpt, which includes the Introduction and comments on Galatians 1:1-10.

The Introduction unfolds in four parts, looking (1) at the nature of the text (text, date, sender, recipients, form and content, what the letter implies about its situation), (2) the contexts for understanding Galatians (including its geographical and chronological contexts), (3) the structure of Galatians, and (4) issues in the reception of Galatians.

Douglas Moo on Galatians

Last month, Douglas Moo, Professor of New Testament at Wheaton College, Illinois, led a two-day intensive course at Oak Hill College, London, on ‘Galatians: a Letter for Today’. I had wondered about trying to attend, but decided that other commitments would prevent me from doing so. In any case, audio files of all the sessions have now kindly been made available by Oak Hill here, and I’m confident they’ll be worth listening to for those able to spare the time.

Southern Baptist Journal of Theology 14, 3 (2010) on Galatians

The latest Southern Baptist Journal of Theology is now out, this fascicle being devoted to Galatians (with the table of contents viewable here).

In the editorial, Stephen J. Wellum notes the significance of Galatians in the history of the church and of Christian theology, offering three reasons for the ‘absolute importance’ of its message for contemporary Christians:

1. ‘Galatians reminds us that every generation must re-commit itself to standing for the gospel in the midst of the perennial danger of compromise and potential loss of the gospel.’

2. ‘Galatians reminds us of the importance of affirming, proclaiming, and living out the implications of the gospel centered in the doctrine of justification by grace through faith.’

3. ‘Galatians, like such books as Romans and Hebrews, also helps us put our Bibles together by unpacking how God’s eternal plan progressively unfolds and develops across redemptive history ultimately culminating in Christ.’

As usual, some articles are made available as samples:
