Saying Grace

This morning I started reading Julian Hardyman’s Idols: God’s Battle for Our Hearts (Nottingham: IVP, 2010) – which is great, by the way – and came across this arresting set of lines by G.K. Chesterton…

You say grace before meals.
All right.
But I say grace before the play and the opera,
And grace before I open a book,
And grace before sketching, painting,
Swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing;
And grace before I dip the pen into the ink.
